About Five Motets the composer writes: “I wrote the first motet in Pittsburgh in 1991. The rest of the motets were composed in Davis, California after 1994, and were inspired by Paul Hillier and Ars Nova Copenhagen, who premiered them” (June 21-23 1997, Copenhagen, Denmark).

'In Monte Oliveti' is the first of the nine responsories for Matins of Maundy Thursday. It was written for John Goldsmith and the Bellafield Singers.
'O vos omnes' is from Lamentations 1:12, and it is the the fifth of the nine responsories for Matins of Holy Saturday. It is dedicated to Eric Moe.
'Laboravi in gemitu meo' is the verse 6 of the Psalm 6. It is dedicated to Christopher Reynolds.
'Haec Dies' is an antiphon at Vespers – Easter Week – Psalm 117:24. It was composed in memory of Dr. Fernando Chirife (1978-1995).
'Epithalamica' is based on an Easter sequence by Pierre Abélard. It is dedicated to Mario Lavista.
